2026 NARI Regional RotY Award – Residential Bath $70,000 to $100,000
Transforming a Tired Hallway Bathroom into a Modern Retreat
Location: Austin, TX
Project Type: Bathroom Renovation
Timeline: Design – 3 months, Build – 4 weeks
Budget: $26,000
This project transformed a small, dated bathroom that, despite daily use, suffered from poor lighting and an inefficient layout. By improving the lighting, optimizing the layout, and upgrading the cabinetry and tile, we created a fresh, modern space that’s both welcoming and toddler-friendly.

Our client expressed their frustration with everyday tasks, especially during their child’s bath time. The door blocked almost half the tub when it was open, and the space between the tub and vanity/toilet allowed little room for movement, making it difficult to wrangle a young boy. The poorly designed shelving made accessing essentials difficult, further complicating daily tasks.
“Besides being outdated, we felt the need to create a more spacious feel without changing the limited footprint of the room…”
– Angela
The cramped layout, poor lighting, and lack of functional storage made a full renovation necessary to meet the family’s needs. Simple updates wouldn’t have addressed the design flaws or improved the space’s functionality and comfort. Starting fresh allowed us to create a modern, adaptable bathroom that truly works for the family.
“I love that our son – now 4 – can use everything independently without obstacles”

From the initial contact on August 17 until demolition day on November 27, the entire planning phase was completed remotely. Using 3D drafting software, we designed the bathroom layout, cabinet, stool, shelving, and pocket door to fit precisely. The client verified a few key measurements for the vanity, while the rest of the design was based on eight photos and our expertise in building standards.
All design discussions, material selections, and approvals were handled via video calls and email. We arrived on-site on November 27 and completed the project by December 19, delivering a fully customized bathroom without a prior in-person visit
” A perfect match !”

We designed the new custom vanity with precise dimensions to ensure it fits perfectly in the space. It was crafted by a local cabinet shop renowned for its skilled craftsmen, who bring decades of experience and trusted, classic woodworking techniques.
The previous cabinet left the space feeling cramped, but the new floating vanity opens up the room. Though smaller in size, it offers more functional storage, with a full-size lower drawer and a middle drawer that fits snugly around the plumbing.
“It has been amazing to have a custom wooden step stool built perfectly underneath the floating vanity- no more tripping over plastic step stools with nowhere to go!”
– Angela

To improve the convenience of storing everyday items, we removed the bulky headknocker cabinet and installed two open shelves above the toilet. Open shelving maximized storage and minimized clutter.
The recessed niche to the left of the vanity required modifications to the framing and electrical to use all the space. Moved the outlet into the open medicine cabinet for easy access to an electric toothbrush.
“He [client’s son] knows where to find everything he needs because everything has a designated space.”
– Angela

The original bathroom lighting was limited to a single fixture above the vanity mirror, providing inadequate illumination and an outdated look. We upgraded to a warm three-light vanity fixture, provided by the client, and added a can light above the shower for better overall lighting.
To streamline controls and optimize space, we installed a two-gang junction box with a dimmer switch for the lights and a separate switch for an upgraded exhaust fan.
We installed a deeper, standard-width soaker tub, which created more floor space while providing a comfortable upgrade. The high-quality, relatively new Hansgrohe shower valve and trim were kept, and we upgraded to a durable all-metal handheld shower head for improved functionality.
The sleek, high-arch vanity faucet complements the light fixture, contributing to the modern aesthetic. We also modified the in-wall plumbing and replaced the shutoff valves to align with the new cabinet design.

We transformed the space with sleek, arctic white wainscoting tile, installing it in the shower and continuing it around the walls behind the toilet and vanity. The uniform white tile creates a clean, bright backdrop that reflects light throughout the room.
In contrast, the floor features a multicolored tile with driftwood-colored grout, adding texture and visual interest. The combination of crisp white walls and a more dynamic floor design enhances the modern aesthetic while making the space feel open and inviting.

The new four-panel shaker-style pocket door, which matches the home’s front door, was a major upgrade from the previous swing door. By sliding into the wall behind the shower, the pocket door frees up valuable space that was once obstructed. No more awkwardly maneuvering around the door in the small bathroom
“The pocket door has been a game changer for us, and in addition Everend was able to widen the door which gave the room an instant upgrade to feeling more spacious “
– Angela

We selected an Incredible White satin finish for the walls and ceiling, enhancing the light reflected from the large mirror, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. The angora-colored door & trim adds striking contrast, making the white walls stand out even more.
The niche cabinet features a two-tone design: Angora on the back, with Incredible white trim and clear-coated maple shelves, adding depth and texture to the space. The bold Lagoon-colored vanity cabinet serves as a focal point, bringing a vibrant touch to the modern aesthetic.

This renovation transformed the bathroom into a modern, functional space, exceeding the client’s expectations. Careful attention to detail and thoughtful upgrades have created a beautiful, inviting room that will serve the family well for years to come.
“We are very satisfied and looking forward to working
with Everend on our next home project!”
